Annual writing competition starting soon

Every writer, regardless of age or background, becomes a published author when they enter the Celebrate the Arts Writing Contest, January 4 – March 1. The 16th annual competition is organized by the Westerville Arts Council, the Westerville Public Library and This week’s community news. January calendar

January – “Winter splendor.” Original works of art and unusual gifts are on display at the Inspired Fine Arts Gallery, 259 N. State St.

January and February – The Java Gallery featured artists: John Cameron and Richard Leavy. The works of watercolor artists and professional instructors are on display at 20 S. State St.

January 4 – Celebrate the Arts writing competition opens.

January 8 – Open house “Decor for the soul”, from 11 am to 3 pm. Visitors will discover the original artistic commissions and possibilities for home and business. David Myers Art Studio & Gallery, 7 W. Main St.

January 8, 15, 22 and 29 – Live music at the Java Central Cafe, 7-10 p.m. Performances include classic rock from String Theory, blues and country from guitarist and singer Charles Sealy, and award-winning blues from duo Lil ‘Red and the Rooster. Admission is free to 20 S. State St.

January 14 – Public reception of the Otterbein professors and staff exhibition, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition is open until March 4. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the Miller Gallery, Art & Communication Building, 33 Collegeview Road.

From January 10 – Mini art museum. Teens can purchase a canvas and paint kit and create an original painting to display in the tiny museum in the Teen Room. Register at westervillelibrary.org.

January 10 – Auditions for “Present Laughter” by Noel Coward. 6:30 p.m. Registration Auditions begin at 7 p.m. at the Curtain Players Theater, 5691 Harlem Road in Galena.

January 11 – Craft with the Board: Barn Quilt Signs, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will create a geometric pattern on a 12-inch square block of wood, forming a custom symbol. Supplies and wine are included at Good Vibes Winery, 2 S. State St. Register at artscouncilofwesterville.com.

January 12 – Figure studies session, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Artists use the medium of their choice to work on studies of human figures. Tonya Ramsey will lead the group at Sunbear Studio, 22 W. Main St. For more information, email [email protected]

January 14 – Exploration of music. Children ages 8 to 11 can pick up a free kit filled with musical experiences and activities, available while supplies last at the Westerville Public Library, 126 S. State St.

January 18 – Sip & Sketch Art Session: Snow Birds, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants use acrylic on canvas guided by the artist. The session includes supplies and wine at Good Vibes Winery, 2 S. State St.

January 26 – WACKY Kids & Youth Art Workshop: Radial Engraving, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children ages 7 to 12 will be inspired by this class taught by a licensed art teacher and held at Point at Otterbein, 60 Collegeview Road. Register at artscouncilofwesterville.com.

January 27 – Nachos for Dinner: Cooking Demonstration and Author Visiting Webinar, 7 to 8 pm Editor and author of The Food In My Beard food blog, Dan Whalen will lead a home cooking demonstration. Register at westervillelibrary.org.
