Burnham-On-Sea Book Festival Launches Free Writing Contest


The team behind the new Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Literary Festival launched a writing competition this week.

The new Burnham-On-Sea Book Festival is set to launch next year on April 22-23 at the Princess Theater and Burnham Library in Burnham.

The festival’s first free writing competition is open to residents living in Somerset or North Somerset with cash prizes available for the best short stories and poetry.

“It’s a great way to share your work with the community,” says Rebecca Strickland, one of the organizers of the Burnham-On-Sea Book Festival. “We want everyone to get involved.

“The winning stories and poems, and outstanding finalists, will be featured in an anthology that will be on sale to the public after the competition. “

Registration is free and writers can submit up to three entries in the categories they are eligible for, as below:

The writing competition has six categories:

Short stories :

  • Under 11 – maximum word count 500. Price £ 30
  • 11 – 15 years old – maximum word count 1000. Price of £ 30
  • Adult (16+) – maximum word count 2000. Price of £ 100

Poetry (one poem per entry):

  • Under 11 – £ 30 prize
  • 11 – 15 years old – price of £ 30
  • Adult (16+) – £ 100 prize

One of the organizers and local author, Lewis Coleman, adds, “Writing contests are a great way to practice your craft. We know there is a lot of talent in Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea and we expect a good standard from the participants!
