‘Daughter of the Deep’ Disney+ moves into writing phase

Rick Riordan took to his blog to discuss production updates on Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Tucked away in the post was a quick update on his Daughter of the Deep movie, which is in development for Disney+.

Riordan says the streamer has his idea and can now move on to the writing process, “Aditi Kapil and I have shared our plan for the Daughter of the Deep movie adaptation with Disney+ and the studio has cleared us to move on to the script. Now the real writing begins!

The book follows Harding-Pencroft Academy student Ana Dakkar. She learns that at the end of her freshman year, her class will participate in a top-secret sea trial weekend.

Daughter of the Deep was released on October 26, 2021 by Disney-Hyperion. The book is a New York Times bestseller. Unlike Riordan’s early books which dealt with mythology, Daughter of the Deep is a Retrofuturism science fiction novel set in a contemporary timeline of the world of Jules Verne’s books 20000 Leagues Under the Sea and The mysterious island. It is a derivative work, featuring machinery, tools, and settings depicted in Verne’s books, and characters descended from Verne’s characters. It combines both old and future technologies, fusing elements of steampunk and artificial intelligence.
