Deborah James’ Second and Final Book Tops Amazon Ranking Ahead of Publication | Books


Pre-orders for Deborah James’ second book skyrocketed within days of its availability. The podcast host’s memoir and self-help volume topped Amazon UK’s bestseller list, ahead of Richard Osman’s popular crime novel The Man Who Died Twice.

The publication of How to Live When You Could Be Dead was brought forward this week, after the announcement that the author did not have long to live. It will now be released in August, rather than January next year as originally planned.

James, who is 40, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in 2016 and doctors told her she had less than an 8 per cent chance of surviving the next five years. Since then, the former Deputy Head of Secondary has hosted BBC Radio 5’s podcast You, Me and the Big C live about cancer, and has raised over £5.7million for Cancer Research UK through her fund. Last week she was made a Dame for her campaign work and honored by the Duke of Cambridge at her parents’ home. It came just days after she revealed she had moved into hospice care with her family.

Drawing on his own experience of living longer than expected by doctors, James explores the benefits of living “in the present” and learning “to value one day at a time”.

Announcing the change in publication date on Instagram, James described the book as a way to share what she’s learned about “how to have a positive mindset when we face life’s greatest challenges”.

The new release date will still be, she said, long after she “flies high” but “hopefully a little shorter for you to wait.”

For every copy sold in the UK, £3 will go to the Bowelbabe Fund.
