We had the chance to recently sit down with Menounos and chat about Vacation and his new Lifetime Vacation movie, Holiday correction. Coming up, you’ll see where Menounos shared some amazing gift ideas to pick up at two of his favorite stores, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s and also gave us some tips for hosting holiday parties that we can’t wait to try.

She knows: How are you celebrating the holidays this year?

Maria Menounos: Well I’m right now here in Connecticut with my dad. So Thanksgiving, we were here with parents and family and stuff. Christmas is still a bit in the air.

SK: Understandable.

MM: There’s a potential trip to Disney in the works because I feel like Christmas is a little different this year without my mom, so I’m trying to think of what would be the happiest thing I could do and what would be Disney. I don’t know if I will intervene at the last minute, but we will try.

SK: Let’s say you forgot to give someone on your list a gift and need to buy something awesome at the last minute. First of all, where do you go to get a gift and what are you going to get them?

MM: OKAY. Well first of all that’s why I partnered up with TJ Maxx and Marshall’s because they are the place to be to get everything you need. And so if I forgot to give someone a gift, I could go online and start reading carefully. It depends on the person. You can buy a comfy blanket and there are these amazing percussion massagers that people are obsessed with right now. And you know, there are Christmas stockings like makeup, nail polish and stuff like that. It depends on who it is, but that’s why TJ Maxx and Marshall make it so easy to buy for anyone on your list.

SK: What would you suggest to the person on your list who already has everything? They always seem to be the hardest to buy.

MM: I’m going with things that I know they’ll always need. You always want to keep warm, so something like a cozy bathrobe or blanket. You can never have enough. When you choose something comfortable, you get a feeling of instant happiness so that no one will ever be mad at it or the candles. The towels are also great. Gifting someone a new set of towels, a bathrobe, and candles to kind of give them that sanctuary vibe is awesome, especially if someone has had a really tough year.

SK: How would you describe your personal holiday decoration?

MM: I get crazier and crazier each year with my personal vacation style and love it. I like to increase it every year. This tree that we had last year is 14 feet tall. I wanted to overwhelm my parents. Again, after going through a rough time, I was like, let’s crush them. Let’s make them feel really good and in the spirit, but I decorate it sparingly. I don’t want it to be too much, so whatever I decorate has to be chic and pretty simple. We have another tree in the hallway, a white tree which is really beautiful. It is only the lights that are colored. I had reindeer this year to put on the front lawn.

SK: We are still in the midst of a pandemic, but now that people are vaccinated and gatherings start to be more frequent this year, people are having holiday parties. Do you have any tips for people throwing parties to make the whole process easier?

MM: I’m having a holiday party so I’m figuring it out. And so we make sure everyone is tested before they come. But you know for me I love to throw parties so I did a whole episode on my podcast where I put together party tips because I think you have to have a really great vibe when we celebrate. You want to have the right music, you want to have the right lighting, you want to dim the lights, you need to light candles. I also make fresh cupcakes all day for my party and this year they will have a theme because I have a holiday movie coming out on December 11 titled Holiday correction so I associate them with the film. So little things like that add a little touch and then of course, the decor. I went to TJ Maxx and picked up this beautiful marble cheese board with little finishing handles that look really nice on the counter and glassware for serving my cocktails. You want it to be really pretty. You don’t spend a lot to make it look great, but the visuals are important.

SK: So let’s say, you know, instead of organizing, you go to a party. Do you have a favorite or must-have hostess gift?

MM: Yeah, I like things like that, I like to take some kind of gift of household items to bring which is useful for the party that can even be used in that party atmosphere that day. Whether it’s a large cheese board or tall wine glasses or cocktail glasses, aprons are always a lot of fun and festive. I think if you can do the bottle of wine too, you know you can never go wrong with a bottle of wine, but for me, I like to do something different.

SK: Are there some traditional holiday foods that you absolutely can’t stand?

MM: I like food! I don’t know if there is something that I don’t like.

SK: Is there one that you are still looking forward to?

MM: Yes, everything I do! I make a great holiday meal so thank you Mom for teaching me how to cook. Whether it’s, you know, Greek cheese pies or I make the fluffiest turkey ever known to man. I also make a great crab meat pie. Another good one is the Buffalo Chicken Macaroni and Cheese.

SK: OK, so last question for you and it’s an easy question to complete. Nothing says vacation like ______.

MM: See someone smile.
