Two people, including a St. Louis County police officer, were killed Wednesday afternoon in a car crash in northern St. Louis County, police said. A second detective was slightly injured.

The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the Voisins de Bellefontaine. Detective Antonio Valentine was on duty in an unmarked police car with an anonymous second detective when they collided head-on with another vehicle.

The detectives and the other driver, whose name has not been released, were taken to hospital. Valentine died there, police said.

“What I’m asking all of you now is just to cry with us, to support us, to support the family for whatever they are going through,” said the acting St. Louis, Kenneth Gregory, to reporters outside Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Shortly before the fatal crash, police said, other detectives from the department’s Bureau of Drug Enforcement attempted to stop a black Volkswagen Jetta, but the driver refused to stop and drove west. on Chambers. Valentine was also involved in drugs and was nearby, driving an unmarked Dodge Caravan. He responded and was heading east on Chambers when the Jetta crossed the center lane and struck the Caravan, police said. News photos and video from the scene show that the front ends of both vehicles were completely destroyed in the collision.

Valentine joined the county police department in 2007. Backstoppers, an organization that supports the families of police officers who have been injured or killed, noted in a press release that Valentine was a father. His uncle is a police officer in the city of Saint-Louis.

Backstoppers accepts donations for Valentine’s family.
