Workington author to host animal-focused writing class for youngsters

An award-winning children’s author from Workington is launching a six-week animal-focused writing course for youngsters.

Pet Time Stories, directed by Helen Haraldsen, is aimed at young people aged around 10 to 15 who are interested in animals. It runs from April 20 to May 25, 2022.

“I’ve been known for writing animal stories featuring my own pets and ponies and love working with young writers to help them write stories about their favorite pet or animal,” said Helen, English teacher at Keswick School and former school librarian.

Helen’s first novel, little pearl, was released in 2019 and became a bestseller. Since then, she has made a name for herself with her two series, Amber’s Pony Talesbased on his own childhood ponies and experience of equestrian sport through the UK Pony Club, and Daley’s Dog Talesbased on her dogs, Lucy, Petra and Bella.

On the Pet Time Stories Course participants will learn how to come up with a lasting story idea, create a structured and well-developed outline, start the story, create impact and pacing, understand timing and place secondary characters.

Helen said: “Pet ownership has increased dramatically during the pandemic. Some young people may have a pet in the household for the first time, experiencing all the joys and adventures it can bring.”

The modules will be delivered via Zoom. More details at
